About Us

The Institute for Green Science is a center for basic green science research in oxidation catalysis aimed at the invention of new green technologies designed to aid in the pursuit of a sustainable world where creative educational programs are also developed to integrate sustainability inspired thinking into chemistry.

 

Our Vision

We aspire to advance the critical understanding and transformative thinking needed to build the chemical dimension of a sustainable civilization.

We seek to design ever better catalytic oxidation chemistry and technologies to show how technical, cost, health, and environmental performances can all be integrated into a unified sustainable value proposition, especially for processes that effectively and safely reduce/eliminate hazardous chemical contaminants and pathogens from water eventually to protect life and make clean water more easily accessible for all humanity.

We pursue a systemic approach that integrates multiple points of view and draws on the strengths of numerous fields both within and beyond chemistry and science.

 

Our Mission

We work to map the intellectual landscape of sustainability as it applies to chemistry by learning and advancing the transformative concepts and language that are required.

We aim to continuously improve in educating leaders at the interface of chemistry and sustainability to graduate world-class chemical scientists who are armed with deep sustainability insight.

We help to build and be part of a global academic community that can address sustainability challenges genuinely and effectively.

And we endeavor to develop novel funding resources that are adequate for the immensity of the implications of sustainability challenges.

 

Our Research

The IGS studies catalytic oxidation chemistry involving the design, mechanisms of reactivity, and applications of TAML® activators, which are highly effective, full functional, small molecule mimics of peroxidase enzymes. For more details, visit the Research page.

 

Our Teaching

IGS faculty offer courses in kinetics and mechanism, organo-transition metal chemistry, and inorganic oxidation chemistry. The IGS further contributes though the ongoing perfection of a first-of-its-kind class called "Chemistry and Sustainability (C&S)". C&S was launched in 1992-93 to learn and optimize what knowledge and insight is appropriate for education at this interface.

In practical interdisciplinary education, we help to advance standards and technologies to promote sustainable development in chemistry. Four performances are critical for sustainable chemical technologies: technical, cost, health, and environmental. By working with environmental health scientists around the Tiered Protocol for Endocrine Disruption, IGS scientists are learning how to integrate health and environmental performances into the value proposition of TAML® activators and processes by avoiding developmentally disrupting chemicals.

We help to educate the general public about the crucial role that green science and sustainability oriented ethical thinking has to play in evolving an advanced and truly sustainable world economy.Free, online coursework is available on this website to help schools and the public understand the connection between chemistry and sustainability.

We promote lively debate and discussions about important sustainability issues, invite renowned scholars to campus to lecture on the interface of chemistry and sustainability, and reach out to children and high school students to engage in sustainability related education and discourse.
